1 CORINTHIANS: God’s Building

1 Corinthians 3:10-17

Passage Summary: The only sure foundation upon which to build the church is Jesus Christ. Therefore, let us build on this foundation appropriately, using materials that have eternal value. Why is it important that we pay attention to how we build? Because we, the church, as God’s temple, His sacred dwelling place.

Outline:

The foundation of the church is Jesus Christ (vv. 10-11)

The work of the church is to build with material of eternal value (vv. 12-15)

The identity of the church is God’s Temple and dwelling place (vv. 16-17)

Revelation 4,

4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads.… 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: 11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

Sending Word: Ephesians 2:19-22,

19Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

Questions for Discussion:

1. What are things in your life that are fine and good, but ultimately will not survive past the fire of Christ’s return?

2. What are ways we might shape our lives differently so that we are building more with gold, silver, and costly stones?

3. What are the possible implications for us as the temple of God? How should this impact the way we live and act together?
