1 Corinthians: The Unleavened Church
Preacher: Pastor Tiffany Flanagan Series: 1 Corinthians Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:6–8, 2 Corinthians 6:16– 7:1
SERMON NOTES
1 Corinthians 5:6-8
“The Unleavened Church”
Main Point: Let us seek to fight sin and get rid of wickedness in our church.
Two reasons we are to get rid of wickedness:
I. The actions of one affect an entire community.
“In thinking that my sin is just my own, Satan is a crafty spider, spinning a web of concealed threads sticking to those we never intended to harm.” (Greg Morse, “Secret Sins Will Harm Others”)
II. Christ has made us holy.
A. Expelling wickedness doesn’t make the church holy, the church expels wickedness because IT IS holy, by the blood of Christ.
B. We are holy, therefore we remember and celebrate Christ’s work on the cross with sincerity and truth.
Reflection Questions
- Recall the story of Achan in Joshua 7. Israel knew there was something wrong because they were loosing battles. What evidence do you see today that the church may be defiled? Where are we losing “battles?”
- In what ways are we not reflecting our identity as a sanctified people?
- What wickedness do we need to expel?
