1 Corinthians: But We Were Washed

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Flanagan Series: 1 Corinthians Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:1–11

Sermon Outline for November 14, 2021
1 CORINTHIANS: But We Were Washed

1 Corinthians 6:1-11

Paul’s prohibition against taking another Christian to court is grounded in four reasons:
Reason #1: Christians are more than capable to settle personal disputes without needing to involve outside judgement/authority (vv. 1-5).
Reason #2: Christians airing their disputes in public damages the reputation to the church (vv. 6-7)
Reason #3: Taking brothers or sisters to court for personal profit goes against the heart
and character of Jesus Christ (vv. 7-8; also Matthew 5:38-42).
Reason #4: Wronging others is not in keeping with a Christian’s identity (vv. 9-11)

1 Corinthians 2:10-15,
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. . . . 15 The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things. . . . We have the mind of Christ.
Matthew 5:38-42,
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Sending Word: 1 Peter 2:20-21,
But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. 21 To
this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you
should follow in his steps.

“All the persons of faith I know are sinners, doubters, uneven performers. We are secure
not because we are sure of ourselves but because we trust that God is sure of us.”
