Waiting with David
1 Chronicles 28:2-10
Introduction
The significance of the Temple for David
Security/Rest (Psalm 18:6; 27:5; 68:5; 91:1-2, 9-10; 132:13-16)
David’s Preparation for a Temple
- David battled Israel’s enemies in order to secure peace (1 Kings 5:2-5)
- David instructed Solomon in the plans for the temple (1 Chronicles 28:11-13)
- David prepared the materials necessary for building the Temple (1 Chronicles 29:1-9)
- David planned for worship at the Temple’s dedication (Psalm 30)
Significance for Us Today
(1) In the Old Testament, security/rest were always temporal; Jesus came to bring an eternal security/rest.
(2) God’s goal was never to just dwell in a Temple; God’s goal was always to dwell with people throughout all the earth.
Therefore, just like David, we do not wait passively, but we work to build God’s Temple on earth “so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other” (1 Kings 8:60).
Revelation 21:3-4 – And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
1 Kings 8:27 – But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built! … vv. 59-60 – And may these words of mine, which I have prayed before the LORD, be near to the LORD our God day and night, that he may uphold the cause of his servant and the cause of his people Israel according to each day’s need, 60 so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other.
Revelation 21:22 – I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
1 Corinthians 3:16 – Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
Paraphrase based from 1 Chronicles 28:9-10 – Let us acknowledge God and serve Him with wholehearted devotion and a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If we seek him, he will be found by us. If we forsake him, he will reject us forever. Consider now, for the Lord has chosen us to build His Temple throughout the earth. Let us be strong and do the work.
