1 CORINTHIANS: Marriage and Singleness
1 Corinthians 7:25-40
Introduction:
Text:
Two reasons Paul encourages singleness:
Reason #1 – to prevent worry in light of the “present distress” Reason #2 – for having an “undivided devotion to the Lord”
James 4:14, “What is your life? You are just a mist that appears for a short time and then vanishes.”
1 John 2:15-17, “Do not love the world.… For the world and its desires are passing away, but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”
Application:
- Whether a person is married or single should not be an excuse for greater or lesser responsibilities
- We should fight against the cultural assumption that marriage is the better route
- We should view marriage from the perspective that this world is passing away 4. We should fight for true biblical community
Sending Word: Rom. 12:10-15,
10Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. . . . 15Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.
