2 Corinthians: Taking Captive Every Thought

Preacher: Jeff Flanagan Series: 2 Corinthians Scripture: 2 Corinthians 10:1-11

Sermon Outline for April 23, 2023
2 Corinthians 10:1-11 || Taking Captive Our Thoughts

Summary of the Passage:
Paul is responding to accusations that he is too “timid” (worldly, vv. 2-3) in his approach
toward the Corinthians, and therefore, not acting with the authority of a true apostle of
Christ. Paul explains his ministry as though he is a general in battle, capturing hearts and
minds for the sake of Christ (vv. 3-6). The weapon he fights with is one of divine power –
i.e., the gospel message of Jesus (see, e.g., 1 Cor. 1:17-25; 2:3-5; 2 Cor 4:2-7; Rom 1:16-
17). It is through the transformation of the gospel that Paul will present the thoughts and
minds of the Corinthians as obedient to the lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 1:20-25,
Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God
the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the
foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and
Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews
and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and
Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Application:
#1 – We need to submit all our views, opinions, and beliefs to Jesus and his gospel.
#2 – We need Paul’s perspective in our approach toward others.
Sending Word:
Romans 12:2, Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by
the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will
is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Questions for Discussion:
• What is Paul’s objective in vv. 3-6? What are some implications
it has for us today?
• What are some thoughts, philosophies, beliefs, or “isms” that possibly get
entangled with the gospel in your heart? (e.g., materialism, nationalism,
hedonism, etc.)
• What are some “fortresses/strongholds” in your past that the
gospel of Jesus has demolished?
• How might you intentionally communicate the gospel to a neighbor, colleague, or
family member? What are intentional actions you could take? What are things
you could say?
• How is the gospel-driving life different from being “nice” and “neighborly”?
