LUKE: Jesus, Lord of the Sabbath

Luke 6:1-16

vv. 1-5: Jesus claims to be Lord over the Sabbath.

 

vv. 6-11: Jesus demonstrates he is Lord of the Sabbath.

  Having a physical deformity in Bible times often meant a short life span (v9)

 

Purpose of the Sabbath:

   1) Rest is a good and gracious gift.

   2) It is identity shaping.

   3) It is spiritually shaping.

      The Sabbath trains God's people to rely and trust Him.

   4) It is a proclamation to the world about the sovereignty of God.

 

Political/Religious debates regarding Sabbath and the Law.

   The Pharisees believed people needed to be pure for God to bring His kingdom

 

vv. 12-16: Jesus begins building His Kingdom - the people of God.

 

Applications for us in today's world:

1) Keep a historical perspective.

2) Keep an eternal perspective.

3) Keep a global perspective.

4) Keep a kingdom perspective.

5) Be a peaceful prescence.

6) Be loving to others.
