The Gospel and Transformation

Scripture: Colossians 3:1–17

Sermon Invitation

Kris invited us to revisit the passage from the sermon sometime this week.  You can find his invitation at about 1:13:30 on the video.  Or, here is a summary:

  • Pray through Colossians 3:1-4 and ask God to grow your understanding of your identity.  Ask Him what would it look like to step towards it in faith.
  • Look at Colossians 3:5-11 and be honest about the things of the flesh so that you can be free and repent.
  • Read Colossians 3:12-17 again and ask where you can begin to pursue the Spirit in ways that would begin to change and transform you.
  • Share with a friend.

Worship Notes
It is great to get to share some of my notes on the song selections again for this Sunday. I hope that we will be able to listen to the songs and meditate on the texts as we prepare ourselves for worship each week.

Excited to worship with you this Sunday!

The Lion and the Lamb

Revelation 5:5

Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Jesus Christ is the Lion of Judah, the King of kings, yet at the same time, He is the perfect Lamb of God who was sacrificed for us. We can’t focus on just one aspect and forget about the other. If we only think of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, we can lose sight of His power that overcame death and will come again soon to restore everything. Still, if we only think of His power, we can also lose sight that we serve a King who was willing to come to earth to be with us and suffer for us out of love. Our God is so amazing that we cannot contain Him in our simple mortal descriptions. But we are also loved by a God who knows everything about us, and still wants us to draw closer to Him in relationship.

Because He Lives (Amen)

For us to be able to sing, “He lives,” Jesus first had to die. There is no Easter without the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. We are saved from the punishment for sin by His blood, but we are given the promise of the future through His resurrection. No matter what our circumstances or the current state of the world, when we look to Jesus, the living Lord of the universe, we know that our best days are not behind us. We have a glorious future awaiting us because He lives.

My Worth Is Not in What I Own

Two wonders here that I confess
My worth and my unworthiness
My value fixed my ransom paid at the cross

That is my favorite verse of this song. How can someone who screws up as much as I do still be worth enough to God that He would sacrifice for me? We sang last week that we could call ourselves children of God. Our worth is only in relationship to Him who created us. We cannot boast of our own works. Nothing we could produce would be of value to the God of everything. The only thing we can offer is lives that point to Him who loves His creation even to a criminal’s death on the cross.
