Advent: Spiritual Blindness

Preacher: Tiffany Flanagan Series: Advent Scripture: John 9:8-34

SERMON NOTES for 12.04.2022
John 9:8-43 | “Advent: Spiritual Blindness”

Passage Summary:
Jesus heals a man born blind which is a clear indication that the Messiah has come. People who reject
Jesus are spiritually blind. Thus, we should beware of nurturing characteristics that may keep us from
seeing Jesus as Lord.
Characteristics of spiritual blindness:
I. Cannot understand what God is actually doing in the world.
A. Their anchor of truth is not God himself, but a religious system they have created for their own
gain.
B. Jesus comes as the light in a chaotic world. He is the anchor to whom we must cling.
II. Overlook people on the margins
III. Fearful and defensive
Application:
1) Humbly seek to understand what God is doing in this world and your place in it.
2) Compassionately look into the eyes of those who are hurting and notice our own frailty.
3) Courageously pursue and proclaim the truth that Jesus is Lord
Reflection Questions:
1) Read John 8. What connections do you see between John 8 and 9?
2) When the world seems chaotic and you just can’t understand what you see around you, where do
you turn? What is your anchor for truth?
3) What are practical ways you can practice each of the application points?
