Living Out the Cross || 1 Corinthians 12:11 – 13:14
Summary of 2 Corinthians
The Problem: A prior conflict between Paul and the Corinthians led to a harsh letter
from Paul, which ultimately had a positive effect and led the church to repent and seek
restoration. Despite the church’s overall positive change towards Paul, there remains
some influential antagonists who continue seeking to undermine Paul’s authority.
Paul’s Goal: Paul seeks full reconciliation back to the church by reaffirming his love for
the them and by reasserting his place as Christ’s apostle.
Paul’s Method: Paul defends his ministry and actions as one of cruciform living—that
is, a life modeled after the cross of Jesus Christ. Paul calls on the Corinthians (and all
Christians) to likewise embrace the way of the cross. This means Christians accept the
humility, shame, and suffering that is associated with loving others and glorifying God
in this world.
Key verses:
2 Cor. 5:21, For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we
might become the righteousness of God.
2 Cor. 8:9, For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich,
yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.
