1 Corinthians: Following the Crucified Lord

Preacher: Pastor Jeff Flanagan Series: 1 Corinthians Scripture: 1 Corinthians 4:14–21

Sermon Outline for October 17th, 2021

1 CORINTHIANS: Following the Crucified Lord

1 Corinthians 4:14-21

Introduction: Key issues Paul addresses in the church

- Factions around certain leaders

- The exalting of ‘wisdoms’ to the detriment of the cross

- A tolerance towards sin within the church

vv. 14-17

vv. 18-21

1 Cor. 1:17-18, For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel— not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. 18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1 Cor. 2:4-5: My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

Conclusion

Closing Word: 2 Corinthians 10:3-5,

3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Questions for Discussion:

1. Do you think it is evident to the world that you follow a crucified, self-sacrificial Lord? What areas of your life must change in order to make this more visible to other people?
