1 CORINTHIANS: Expel the Wicked

1 Corinthians 5:1-13 (Matthew 18:12-22)

Introduction

1 Corinthians 5:1-13

Matthew 18:14-17

Tips for addressing sin in another’s life:

1. Pray for the person leading up to the conversation. Pray for your own heart, that your motivations would be good. Pray that they would receive it well and know that you are for them and love them.

2. Lead with questions. Seek to understand the person’s actions/words. Don’t assume you know why a person did or said something.

3. Ask questions that get to the person’s heart and motivation. Lead them to explain their motivations or intent. Help lead them to examine their own heart.

4. Explain your concern regarding their action/words. Share your perspective of their action/words, and the damage that is may have caused or the risk of damage in the future.

5. Humbly keep the Gospel center to the conversation. Remind the person that all will struggle with sin and that Christ’s death covers sin. Also remind them of God’s desire for people to live holy lives.

6. If the person acknowledges that their action/words were sin and seem genuinely repentant, then the conversation can end with words of encouragement and prayer. If the person is adamant that they are not in sin, then ask for a chance to sit down and discuss the issue further; seek a humble conversation regarding what the Bible says and how it should impact our life in this specific area; Scriptural misunderstanding is not necessarily a sin, although it is important to address, especially if a person’s misunderstanding is leading to sinful actions. If the person acknowledges they are sin, but refuses to turn from their sin, enact the following steps from Matthew 18.

Questions for Discussion:

1. Do you have someone in your life who holds you accountable and speaks to any and all sin issues within your heart?

2. Is there a brother or sister you need to approach with love and compassion regarding a sin issue in their life?
