Jonah 2:1-10

Introduction
Jonah’s View of God in Chapter 2:
• God is Sovereign (v. 3)
o Demonstrated in language and words used for God (e.g., “Lord,” “Almighty”)
o Demonstrated in the stories about God (e.g., “Jonah”)
• God is Present (v. 2)
o In Location
o In Relationship
• God is a Savior (v. 9)
o (v. 2) “From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help” (death)
o (v. 6) “But you, LORD my God, brought my life up from the pit” (resurrection)
Conclusion: Jesus: the true and better Jonah

Matthew 12:38-41,
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to
see a sign from you.” 39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a
sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was
three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three
days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the
judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of
Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here.
Isaiah 45:22,
22 “Turn to me and be saved,
all you ends of the earth;
for I am God, and there is no other.
